Line Leader

But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

Matthew 19:30

When I was in 1st grade my teacher used to assign jobs at the beginning of each week for all the students in the class. There were some jobs you didn’t want like handing out papers, or the one who had to help sweep the class and pick up trash during clean up time. There was one job every single person wanted though: line leader. There was just something awesome about being the person who’s always in front, some type of desire in our nature from a young age that wants to be first and out front. We see it all the time in our culture. Everybody wants to be the first to have the new iPhone, the first to buy a brand new car, the first to have a good idea, but Jesus says that’s not really what it’s about. Jesus turns this idea of worldly leadership on its head. Jesus demonstrated through his life that service is the way to be a leader. When he was on Earth he served all those around him even though he was literally God as a man. If Jesus says that the true way to lead is to put others first and serve, and gives us such great examples of how to live that truth out, I think it’s something we all could apply even more intentionally to our lives.
